2019’s surprising #1 key feature home buyers look for

Earlier in 2019, The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) outlined the top features wanted in a home. According to their report, NAHB asked approximately 4000 home buyers what mattered to them ranking 175 features based on how essential they were to purchasing decisions. The outcome might be more functional than you’d expect.

Laundry rooms were the number one feature home buyers wanted for 2019 and continue to look for in 2020, with energy-saving features such as energy star appliances, windows, and whole-house certifications coming in a close second. Other needs on the list? Home and garage storage, walk-in pantries, hardwood flooring, a patio and exterior lighting.  As for what’s on the outs?  Super upscale features like three-plus-car garages. Homebuyers today want the most bang for their buck and nothing superfluous.

You might not be in the same situation as the home buyers looking to buy or build a new home, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add critical features in. As an established interior designer, Johanna G. Seldes/IDC has decades worth of experience in (re)creating your home into something new, unique, gorgeous, and functional.

When it comes to laundry, the days of trudging to the dingey screened in porch to put on a load are over. Laundry rooms, usually coupled with redesigning kitchens, secondary bathrooms, and powder baths, are an essential component to almost every remodel Johanna G. Seldes/IDC takes on. An artfully placed and planned laundry room can make a chore feel like less of one. Further, while the space has to perform, it is also valuable square footage. Whether you are expanding and have ample square footage to build out storage and workspace like Johanna G. Seldes/IDC did for this client or you need to keep things minimal with washer and dryer stacked like this client, Johanna G. Seldes/IDC ensures your laundry room compliments your hobby room, mudroom, drop zone, with taking into consideration the spatial planning, floorplan flow and storage.

As for other popular asks, Johanna G. Seldes/IDC can tailor the style of a space to function the function of it. For example, a well-designed lanai can be an extension of the house itself instead of just being a place to enjoy the Florida weather. Clever storage is also at the forefront of wish lists and Johanna G. Seldes/IDC ensures storing goods can be chic and subtle.

No matter what’s the most important aspect of your remodel or new build, Johanna G. Seldes/IDC ensures your wants and needs are timelessly tailored to your lifestyle and tastes.
