The Design Reason Beyond the Season
Florida may be lacking in the distinctive seasons department – but that doesn’t mean your home design can’t enjoy a little seasonal change.
Not to be confused with visiting your local home décor store to accessorize for the seasons, we’re talking about conscientiously thinking about design.
With less focus on decorating for the moment, let’s talk reasons behind the design.
Discovery
Johanna’s initial consultation with her clients is a discovery session. This is when she probes into the “style of life” her clients lead to ensure the design concepts meet their lifestyles. That means Johanna learns more about what is most important to her clients as well as the way they use their homes. With spatial planning as one of Johanna’s greatest strengths, she is then able to design exceptional spaces that exceed those needs.
Solutions
Often, clients want versatile dining areas to accommodate gatherings as well as everyday dining. Plus there has to be a balance between casual, semi-formal and formal dining. To achieve this, Johanna focuses on the kitchen-living floor plan relationship. Extended dining, as shown above, with its grand, oversized kitchen island together with dining for six or more, is a perfect diverse solution.

And in some cases, the design ingenuity calls for accommodating custom dining tables or banquettes.
Outdoor living remains high on the wish-list for anything from summer pool parties to crisp fall evening dinners to New Year celebrations.
For the design to transcend all reasons and all seasons for living, space planning takes on a crucial role. For instance, note larger islands and cooking areas. Not only for function but strategically positioned facing the entertaining area and pool. Johanna strives to create larger covered spaces for multiple seating areas while being part of the outside entertaining area. The covered lanai provides several lighting opportunities… from the workspace task to ambient and mood effect. Plus, hidden roll down screens installed not just for shade and cooling but for a true sense of indoor-outdoor living. Indoor-outdoor furnishing solutions further include modular seating groups, sectional seating and benches – again all strategically placed without affecting view paths.
Other design relationships include lighting, acoustics, and aesthetics. For instance, Johanna may suggest a bent wood dimensional tile or a three-dimensional wall treatment in a family living space. These accents create an additional texture that absorbs sounds while reflecting a warmth ideal for a movie night or music room.
Glass tiles and wall treatments are bright, fresh and contemporary, plus serve as the perfect winter décor detail.

Johanna even takes into consideration additional electrical outlets and their locations. She also never overlooks the perfect spot for the Christmas tree with the best access vantage points for Santa!
It takes solid design coupled with clever spatial planning to achieve the balance between everyday living, large-scale entertaining, intimate gatherings, impromptu visitors, and planned annual family parties and celebrations.
